General vs. Site Specific Approach

VegSpec has a general or a site-specific option to choose before starting your practice designs.

Site Specific

Select the site specific option to narrow down plant choices by state, mlra, soil, and climate options. This is the recommended method as the vegetative list is more user-specific and regionally accurate. Please note that if you choose this option the Site Description screen must be completed before you can continue to the other practice design sections. If the information is not completed accurately, corrections in red are displayed to help you add the applicable information.

General

Users may select the general option for a generalized plant list within a certain region. The Planting Design section is not available in this option, and there are no warnings to alert you of too little information or conflicting entries.

If you are entering very little information, your plant list may be very long and will not be specific to your site or region. Entering Plant Adaptation Zone from the soils attribute screen is the single most important data element. Without Plant Adaptation Zone data, the list of suggested plants will not be appropriate for your site or region. The second most important data element is Climate, Climate Station requires that the state be entered first. You can enter UTM Coordinates or Latitude - Longitude climate data without entering State.

To obtain a list of accurate plants by region, however, it is still important to fill out the Site Description screen as completely as possible.
